The Public Lab Store Starter kits for DIY environmental science

DIY Mini Kite Kit

This is a new, beta product consisting of a stuffable parafoil kite, a 500' reel, a 300' "booster" reel, a Mobius ActionCam HD camera, gloves, and hardware for a pendulum rig. This product is so beta, there aren't even instructions yet, but there will be soon.

We customize the parafoil kite to allow a stabilizing tail configuration, where instead of attaching to a central point, it connects to reinforced loops at the corners via a string "bridle." This has proven to provide a superior flight for mapping applications.

The parafoil kite is appropriate for moderate wind conditions. It has a small profile, and easily stuffs into a backpack. There are no spars, so the whole kit fits into our standard kit box (barely!).

You will probably want to swap out the lens from the standard A-model for a non-fisheye version. This is simple, but requires a small screwdriver. Either a 6mm or 8mm lens is included (both give good results).

You will also want to play with the config file for the mobius camera to set it to intervelometer mode, which can be a little intimidating. Documentation forthcoming.

The pendulum rig is a new idea, but imagine you are ordering a bunch of small, cheap parts to improvise with. If that doesn't deter you, this might be for you!

No FAA permit required (haha).

Community Science Forum: Frac Sand

Our quarterly print publication has a new name, and a wider scope. It's now called the Community Science Forum. This issue is focused on frac sand, and in particular on the work being done in western Wisconsin by community groups concerned about air and water quality impacts of mining operations there.

Usually $5, we're offering the new issue at an experimental price of $2 plus shipping.
