The Public Lab Store Starter kits for DIY environmental science

WheeStat Potentiostat

Sold out.

Created by and in collaboration with Smoky Mountain Scientific

The WheeStat is a potentiostat.  It is especially useful for determining concentrations of metals in water.  It works by measuring electron transfer reactions between species in solution and electrodes. The WheeStat can be used to teach electrochemistry or to quantify the concentration of some analyte (such as a metal ion) in water.

While the Wheestat kit is in its Alpha version, the potentiostat is a proven tool for pollution detection, especially heavy metals. Click here for more details.

This is an Alpha version of the kit, capable of detecting metals like lead, arsenic, and mercury in water.  Please only buy if you are comfortable working with an early-stage device.  Public Lab is a research community and we welcome your assistance in improving the documentation, testing procedures, software and hardware.  We would love to have you join us on the water quality mailing list, or see your research notes.

Currently, software works with Windows and Linux onlyWe are working to make it work with Mac soon.

Learn more about the setup in the notes from Smoky Mountain Open Science. The kit comes un-assembled and some simple soldering will be required.  You will also they need to assemble electrodes, included in the kit.

Community Science Forum: Frac Sand

Our quarterly print publication has a new name, and a wider scope. It's now called the Community Science Forum. This issue is focused on frac sand, and in particular on the work being done in western Wisconsin by community groups concerned about air and water quality impacts of mining operations there.

Usually $5, we're offering the new issue at an experimental price of $2 plus shipping.
